Mst. Sharmin Akter was born in Kalur Para, a very remote village in Fulchari Upazila of Gaibandha District. Being in a severe flood-prone and impoverished river-char area, access to specialized health facilities is extraordinarily difficult.
Sharmin experienced progressive blurriness and severe distortion in both eyes. When her family visited the newly established Sundarganj Vision Centre of DECF, the optometrist suspected keratoconus and referred her via telemedicine to the base hospital.
Advanced corneal topography at DECF confirmed bilateral keratoconus. She was fitted with specialized Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses and put on corneal collagen cross-linking evaluation. Sharmin was able to finish her degree and now tutors young girls in her village.
Prevented Corneal Breakdown with RGP Care.
